WHERE IT STARTED

Founder, Retreat Host, Surf, Surf Apnea & Fitness Coach

What started as a deep love for the ocean — and a curiosity about what happens after women learn to surf — has grown into a global community, international retreats, and now a digital platform designed to keep that connection alive.

Hey, I’m Angie — and I’ve lived many lives.

My background is in business operations, allied health, and fitness. For years, my world looked like full-time work, studying after hours, and running a part-time female fitness business called The Active Sisters — where the idea of sisterhood first took root for me. Sixty-plus-hour weeks for over a decade was my normal.

So… what brought me to Sisterhood of Surf in November 2022?

I grew up in a surfing family and have loved the ocean my entire life — famously known as the Queen of the White Wash 😂. I was always a beginner, but I didn’t even know surfing “levels” existed. I just loved being in the water.

In my twenties, I lost touch with that part of myself as career, achievement, and constant self-improvement became my focus.

At 33, the ocean found me again.

After leaving the corporate world to fully step into my fitness studio — which was then forced to close due to COVID — I found myself in a season of rebuilding. My mental health needed support, and I knew I had to learn something new. So I set myself a simple goal: get better at surfing.

Almost immediately, I became addicted — not to the sport, but to how it made me feel. Surfing became my training focus, my outlet, and my anchor. It felt like a full-circle moment back to a life I once loved.

As someone who has always loved travel, the ocean, and witnessing women come back to life through coaching, I began to notice a huge gap in the learn-to-surf space — especially for women who wanted more than just a lesson. Women who wanted to feel seen, safe, and supported. Women who wanted connection.

That’s where Sisterhood of Surf was born — the 2.0 version of me.

Everything I’ve experienced — personally and professionally — led me here. It was never planned, but I can honestly say this feels like the best chapter of my life.

What you see on our socials is happiness, connection, and highlights of the life I’ve created alongside others.

What you don’t see is the trauma I lived through in my first twenty years, the severe depression I’ve overcome, the chronic health challenges, or the courage it took to walk away from one life and begin again.

I’m turning 39 this year, and for the past 19 years I’ve worked relentlessly to build a life I truly love.  Sisterhood of Surf was built from that place in my heart.

I want women to know they can do hard things.
That small changes can lead to falling back in love with your life.
And that when the right people walk beside you into new doors, old ones naturally close.

I know surfing won’t change everyone’s life.
I know our trips won’t change everyone’s life.
But I do know that the ocean, travel, and the power of women coming together will make a difference.  - Angie

Co-Host, Retreat Leader & Podcast Host

Hey, I’m Tayla — and my journey with Sisterhood of Surf began in October 2023.

I booked myself onto an Indonesian retreat… and almost cancelled.
My anxiety around travelling was intense, and everything in me wanted to stay safe and familiar.

But after a few Zoom calls with Angie — and a deep pull toward surfing, travel, and something more — I forced myself to go.

That trip changed everything.

While I was there, I wrote in my journal that one day I would work alongside Angie and be part of the Sisterhood of Surf team. The sisters I met on that trip encouraged me to reach out — not knowing that Angie had also been thinking about me. She was waiting for the right person and later told me she had manifested me too.

In 2024, my journey officially began as a co-host. Angie mentored me closely, and at the same time I found myself in a deep season of self-development — learning to surf, building confidence, and unlocking a true love for travel.

I also fell completely in love with Indonesia.

So I did something that once would have terrified me — I sold my things and moved to Bali for six months. That time taught me more about myself than I ever expected: slowing down, immersing myself in surf culture, and falling back in love with my life.

From someone who was scared to travel and scared to put herself out there — I now co-host the Sisterhood of Surf podcast, lead retreats, run my own experiences within SOS, and have become an intermediate surfer. Most of all, I’ve discovered how deeply I love witnessing women do hard, brave things.

In 2026, I’ve sold my things again — and Indonesia will officially be my home.

This journey has shown me what’s possible when you say yes, even when you’re scared — and I can’t wait to walk alongside other women as they discover that for themselves. - Tayla

The Women of SOS

The women of Sisterhood of Surf are what make this community what it is.

All ages.  All walks of life. Different stories, different seasons, different reasons for arriving — but all welcomed exactly as they are.

We may bring 50% of the experience, but it’s the women who bring the other 50%.

The openness.

The courage to try.

The willingness to show up — for themselves and for each other.

You don’t need to be

“fit enough,” confident, experienced, or have it all figured out.

You simply need to be willing to participate, to support, and to contribute to the collective energy of the group.

This is a space where strangers become friends, where walls soften, and where women remember parts of themselves they may have forgotten.

Everyone is welcome — as long as they’re willing to bring the other 50%.

As together we grow it 🤍

Justy.

Our SOS Ambassador and the Sister who inspires everyone she meets to get into the water! You will see Justy at our events and our retreats!  Listen to Justys story of how she learnt to surf in her 50s.

Ang plays a role in operations and even though she is not a fan of the surf, she will be your biggest cheerleader in the water. You will see Ang holding a camera capturing you having the time of your life.

Ash will be taking time off in 2024 as she welcomes her 3rd baby to the world.
